Sugar is generally a sweetener. It provides calories and is added to food and drinks to give them a sweet taste as well as texture, body and bulk. It is also sometimes called a caloric sweetener.

As a simple carbohydrate that your body uses for fuel, added sugar has got no other nutritional value.

 

The Difference Between Natural Sugar and Added Sugar

 

  • Naturally occurring sugar is the sugar found in whole, unprocessed foods such as milk, fruit, vegetables and some grains. The most common natural sugars are fructose and lactose. Fructose is found in fruit and lactose is found in milk products.

 

  • Added sugar refers to sugars and syrups added to food during processing. Besides, they are also the sugar that you may add to your food at home.There are serious health consequences to consuming added sugar.

 

Negative Effects of Added Sugar

 

Too much added sugar in your diet can contribute to

  1. Tooth decay,

  2. Obesity,

  3. Difficulty controlling type 2 diabetes,

  4. Higher triglyceride levels,

  5. Lower high-density lipoprotein (HDL, also called “good”) cholesterol levels,

  6. Heart disease.
